6. THE MUPPET CHRISTMAS CAROL (1992)

Ten years before their spoof of It’s a Wonderful Life came the fun-loving Muppets’ version of the ghostly tale. Michael Caine plays the human lead as Scrooge with Kermit the frog in his standard starring role (he and Mickey Mouse are both such ego hounds!) as Bob Cratchit, with Miss Piggy as his lovely wi . . . as his wife. Stealing the show early on are Statler and Waldorf, the two balcony hecklers from The Muppet Show as Caine’s past business partners come to warn him, and later The Great Gonzo as Charles Dickens himself and Fozzie Bear as Scrooge’s old boss “Fozziwig,” instead of Fezziwig. As with most Muppet movies, the songs are an important part of the show and lend quite a bit to the final presentation, especially Kermit’s “One More Sleep ’Til Christmas.” If he sounds a bit different on the song, it’s because this movie was the first feature-length Muppet outing after the death of their creator, Jim Henson. Steve Whitmire took on the high-pressure role of replacing the legend.
